Who is The Landlady?
Qualifying in Garden and Landscape Design at Reaseheath College in 2008, Janet Leigh started The Landlady as a principal designer. For the past six years, she has designed, constructed and planted all manners of gardens; from small, Victorian terraces, to large, open gardens. She now heads a small team of tirelessly enthusiastic landscape contractors who between them have over 30 years experience.
Before she became a garden designer, Janet spent many years successfully working as an Art Director in the advertising industry and is experienced in thinking in an inspiring and creative way. She was involved in the RHS Tatton Astra Zeneca Show Garden, 2007, winning a silver medal for her work.
Janet's creativity, along with her extensive plant knowledge and love of colour means that she has an expert yet practical eye for what will work for you and your garden. Whether you're a garden expert or a novice, whether you want something simple and low maintenance or something more elaborate and detailed, she can transform any space into one of harmony and beauty… and won't be scared to get into the spadework herself!
The Landlady offers a comprehensive design service for all of your gardening requirements, whether you are looking for a new border design, raised vegetable plot or a complete revamp.
Your initial meeting with Janet Leigh, the designer, is an informal chat where she will go through all of your requirements, find out what you want to achieve from your outside space and assess the site. From the information gathered a clear brief will be produced and either posted or e-mailed to you. When you are happy with the brief and after you have made a small deposit, we can start surveying the site and producing your very own garden design.
The hand drawn scaled plans or 3D scaled models will then be presented to you along with a style guide giving you planting suggestions and specified materials. An estimated costing will also be produced, this ensures the design can be realised on your specified budget.
When you are satisfied with your design plan you can source a landscaping company to undertake your project or you can use the services of The Landlady's landscape contractors. Additional construction drawings can be provided if your intention is to build it yourself.
All planting plans and schemes can be provided for you to source and plant yourself or we can take the mither away and to it all for you. To help you keep your garden in tip top condition for years to come, we can supply you with a maintenance plan or maintain it for you.

The Landlady is not just a design service; we can take your design from proper to reality. Janet Leigh, the designer, takes a hands on approach throughout the whole installation, project managing a dedicated landscape team to ensure the design is realised with no hitches, meeting a high quality of build on time, every time. The landscape team specialises in all aspects of hard landscaping, paving, decking, structures, fencing, walls, rendering and water features. All bespoke features are sourced and manufactured from reliable craftsmen and installed by the team.
Janet takes responsibility for all the soft landscaping. Using her aesthetic judgement and horticultural skills, she will select the relevant plant material for your desired scheme and site, to make sure your garden will flourish.
Your new garden is a living creation that will need to be maintained and managed to keep it looking fantastic for years to come. If you choose not to have a maintenance plan or employ us to undertake your garden maintenance, we are always on hand to offer advice on pests, diseases, pruning and the general care of your garden.
Postal design service
Our postal design service is the most cost effective method to having your own personal garden design. You will receive professional, hand-drawn, scaled plans, an outline planting plan and a style guide so you can install the garden yourself or employ your own landscape contractor.
We'll send you a design pack containing a comprehensive questionnaire and information on how to survey your garden and take photographs, taking photographs and soil samples. We're only a phone call away to take you through the process if you have difficulties or you are dealing with a complex site.
The cost of the design guide pack is £20 which will be deducted from the cost of your garden design. When we have received payment and gathered all of your information, our designer, Janet, will draft your design for your approval, before the final plan is drawn. You will receive an A2 detailed scale plan and a style guide detailing colour scheme, plant suggestions, materials and supporting sketches.
